Project Brief

designEX is Australia’s largest interiors, design & architecture event featuring brands in furniture, textiles, lighting, architecture, bathrooms, appliances & surfaces.

Located at the hub of designEX for 2012 was the official pop-up bar ‘Ebony’, a destination created to meet the needs and wants of the most discerning bar hopper.

Offering hospitality and entertainment in equal measures, the Ebony Bar quickly became the mandatory port of call for visitors and exhibitors seeking a celebratory libation or a quiet corner where business and pleasure could converge.

Bar sponsors included Tsar Rugs, Abet Laminati, Ambius, Koda Lighting and Peroni, the latter of which flowed as freely as the conversations.

Project Innovation / Need

For over 24 years, designEX has been Australia’s largest interiors, design ideas and architecture event. In recent times the central bar area has been a key component of the event experience for visitors and exhibitors.

For 2012, the event organisers sought to change the game by commissioning 6 Hats and UNO to create a fully functional hospitality hub, offering the style and swagger of a bar not usually found in the temporary exhibition and event space. From the architecture to the premium menu, lighting, custom furnishings and fittings the Ebony Bar set the new benchmark in its field.

Sustainability

Event design and installation is typically transient, especially in the case of an exhibition stand that 'pops up' for the duration of a single event such as designEX.

In the case of Ebony, our challenge was to create a temporary bespoke bar with a keen eye on sustainable design practise and budget.

To maximise the sustainability outcome we sought to minimise waste, both in the construction process and the post-show life of the Bar. Specifically, key architectural components were to be retained for possible future use, and all catering equipment, truss, lighting and furniture fixtures were hired. Custom designed TSAR rugs were earmarked to be re-used and/or sold.

All Peroni consumed at the bar is also being recycled...!

This award recognises a temporary building or interior. Consideration give to furnishings, fixtures, stands, signage and traffic flow.
