Project Overview

The 'Ernest Foldable Stool' is a simple solution to an easy fold-away stool, focused towards functional ernest furniture, assisting with the lack of space and storage in everyday situations. The stool is made of a solid timber (various options) and hinged with steel pins through brass bearings, erected with a simple ā€˜Uā€™ pin and disassembled simply by its removal. As it folds flat it is easily stored away, allowing those with little storage space to accommodate for their guests or customers with more furniture options.

Project Brief

To design a piece of furniture which reduces in size when not being use. A simple solution to the people who have space issues and still upholding high levels of craftsmanship.

Must keep in mind materials, ethics and environment, as we as designers have a large responsibility to uphold our future effects through creation.

Project Innovation / Need

I could explain how the 'Ernest Foldable Stool' will fit well in the market at the moment, with homes and spaces becoming higher in density, constantly limiting our storage and functional space. But, the honest innovation behind this foldable stool is the unseen nature of good design. Functionality and honesty in creation, when something just works well and does what it's supposed to do. This 'Ernest Foldable Stool' does everything it is suppose to do at 100%. It will always fold out and up for use and storage.

Fully repairable, locally produced, and fully recyclable. When we create something from nothing, it still has an endless effect which will continue for time to come, so let it be done right the first time.

Design Challenge

The biggest challenge was creating a product which was honest to its function and purpose. Staying true to my earnest theories of design and educating people about the story behind its need in society.

Sustainability

The stool is fully recyclable, yet still long lasting. If something can be used 'forever', then the embodied energy which it took to be created can be stored with its use and offset over time. The 'Ernest Foldable Stool' has been designed to last a lengthy lifetime, allowing people to appreciate its use for generations.

An example is if it lasts 30-80 years then that will be enough time for the main material (tree, timber) to regenerate in its place.
