Project Brief

The Otto induction top was designed as part of a range of accessories for the Otto espresso coffee machine. It also had to have the flexibility of being able to operate effectively with various types of cookware.

Careful consideration was given to the optimum heat source, and induction was chosen for it's accuracy and efficiency. Two years were spent in development, working closely with a team of electronic engineers and an induction technology manufacturer.

Project Innovation / Need

The primary electronic challenge was in engaging an induction coil with Otto's small stainless steel base. Custom firmware has been developed that ensures the sensor and coil work reliably with Otto.

The induction top alerts the user at the start of the extraction and will automatically switch off at the end, should the user forget. A peripheral benefit is that Otto's induction top will function perfectly with the vast majority of 304 grade stainless steel cookware.

Five additional heat settings enable a number of functions including brewing espresso with Otto, boiling water and all forms of cooking over any period of time. The milk jug included in the package, can also be used to boil water quickly and efficiently, replacing the need for an electric kettle.

Design Challenge

Extensive research was undertaken within the Australian market. Otto customers in Australia, affectionately known as 'friends of otto' have been carefully observed for their demographic similarities. Feedback from the Australian market confirms the anticipated opportunity in the home espresso segment internationally.

The Otto induction top is currently being used commercially in Australia by specialty cafes for brewed coffee. The induction top will become a standard piece of commercial equipment in the specialty coffee industry internationally.

Sustainability

Induction was chosen for it's accuracy and efficiency. Induction cooking is far more energy efficient than gas or traditional electric ranges as nearly all the energy generated goes directly to heating the cooking vessel.
