Project Overview

The COG side table is a pared down, classic, affordable design.
COG is comprised of just four pieces of FSC veneered poplar plywood.
The three base pieces are locked together using a three way mortice joint that ensures it is extremely strong. The top then slides neatly into the table leg holding it in place.
Assembling COG can also be an intuitive puzzle that forms a fun connection between consumer and object.

Project Brief

COG is the result of wanting to specifically design a product using FSC plywood. In keeping with a philosophy of storytelling through the material and process the qualities of the material was my starting point.I found poplar to be consistent and very light. Perfect for CNC cutting and flatpack distribution.
To ensure its clarity and sustainability credentials COG was also designed without the use of any other material. No metal, plastic or anything other than the FSC material.

Project Innovation / Need

The most innovative thing about COG is its simplicity while at the same time creating a connection. This is achieved by engaging the consumer in the making process.
A simple object that comes with an experience to form a connection between object and consumer.

Design Challenge

As a designer maker the challenge was to design for production and affordability whilst maintaining a craft sensibility and philosophy of longevity.

Sustainability

Designed with a FSC certifed material, COG is produced from a socially and environmentally responsible forest.
Designed as a flat pack, COG starts its life as a puzzle before it is a table. When the table is no longer needed COG is designed for easy disassembly.
The simplicity of COG allows for a minimalist approach to the production footprint.
COG is a design that in the future could be downloaded; Low tech, minimal storage, minimal transport and no need for a toolbox.
