Project Overview
Volley is a new collection of fun and vibrant outdoor furniture from Sydney-based industrial designer, Adam Goodrum, and Australian furniture manufacturer, Tait.
Project Commissioner
Project Creator
Team
The collection was designed by Adam Goodrum in consultation with Tait for production.
Project Brief
The collection is inspired by images of tennis from the 1950s: understated and relaxed, yet with an underlying sense of dash and vigour. The collection is visually light and pared back, designed for casual days lazing in the summer sun.
The collection has been produced in collaboration, giving Goodrum hands-on experience with Tait’s local manufacturing. It is the second collaboration between Tait and Goodrum, who have previously worked together on Airliner
Project Innovation / Need
Volley provides a large collection of different seating and table options, with a common visual language appropriate for any environment. - the family including dining chairs, loungers, rockers, bar stools and different size tables. The accent of rope on the chair arms gives the opportunity for endless colour combinations
Design Challenge
The frame is made from 10mm rod and the seat shell from expanded mesh. The compound curves in the mesh had to be created by pressing the sheet material into shape. This was a new process for Tait, so there was much experimenting and prototyping to resolve and perfect the press for the desired shape - resulting in great seat comfort and Tait now with another method of fabrication in their factory.
Sustainability
Tait is an Australian company. The Volley collection is made in Tait's factory in Melbourne.
Tait is accredited by the Good Environmental Choice Australia eco label or GECA. It is the only environmental product label In Australia, which uses Life Cycle Analysis to indicate the environmental performance of a product. The label is awarded to products that meet voluntary environmental performance standards. The standard conforms to the internationally recognized ISO14001 environmental labelling standard.
