Project Brief
Renowned architecture practice, Fender Katsalidis Mirams (FKM), approached THERE to create a unique external building facade design that would aid placemaking and help amplify the architectural vision.
The facade was to be constructed using timber sourced from the recently demolished Hornibrook Bridge, which once crossed the Pine River that runs through the estate.
The design would need to draw inspiration from the site, the gallery function and materiality to be used, delivering a solution that would capture these aspects in a visually impactful manner.
Project Innovation/Need
Drawing inspiration from the recycled timber's provenance, our interpretive design captures the winding bends of the Pine River at dramatic scale across a series of bladed timber panels.
By playing with extruded sections that punctuate the facade, we were able create a cinematic experience of passing shadows that portray a flowing effect driven by the movement of the sun over time.
Design Challenge
THERE collaborated closely with FKM to work through the engineering and installation challenges that such a large scale execution required. A detailed numbering system for the individual panels was utilised to ensure the correct placement of each of the fabricated sections.
Effectiveness
Just as storytelling is at the core of Aboriginal art, story telling is the basis of the facade design – paying homage to this tradition and heritage of materials, in an innovative and contemporary manner.
A visually stunning execution that responds to site, architecture and materiality.
