Project Overview

The Runaway Spoon is a new cafe / bar venue that required a logo. The owner had thought of a spoon with legs and arms. Barkit Design was able to convince the adoption of an alternate design idea. The branding is flexible enough to serve the broad range of clients, applications and media and perfect for use as decoration and promotion in the venue. The design has been very successful in meeting and exceeding all expectations.

Project Brief

The owner said “I’m renovating the venue, opening at nights and I’m changing the business name, so I need a new logo. The new business name is ‘The Runaway Spoon’ and I kind of like the idea of a running spoon, you know, one with legs and arms. Can you design me a logo?” He wanted to ensure he kept his existing daytime clients which included retirees, mums’ groups, tradies, politicians, corporate leaders, uni students and families - essentially, everyone who eats or drinks. At Barkit we thought, no worries, and we did a running spoon, but we also came up with our preferred design.

Project Innovation/Need

Having carried out research and after exploring various notions, the idea came to us to completely rethink the design brief and propose an alternative idea; to have a spoon in disguise i.e. ‘on the run’. This kept the theme and gave huge diversity in application. The spoon could be any gender, age, nationality, season, hobby etc. The main identity is Ben D. Spoon. The disguise idea is not immediately obvious, giving the viewer an “aha” moment when they get it.

Design Challenge

The main design challenge was to help the owner realise the potential for a logo that was vastly different to his original ideas. The proposed concept was ‘outside the square’ but met immediate and future ambitions of the business and its promotion which may include merchandising and multiple locations. The owner was busy dealing with major renovations, new furnishings, designing new menus, hiring staff and tight deadlines. The owner was helped to realise that this design and Barkit can bring solutions beyond his initial expectations, giving him peace of mind and ideas for growth.

Effectiveness

The design has exceeded expectations especially with meeting the needs of the different faces of the venue and the broad range of patrons at different times of the day and days of the week. Weekend menus are relaxed and sporty, evenings are fun, chic and outgoing and promotions can be seamlessly linked to the logo using a new disguise for Ben D. Spoon and his various iterations.
